Community Service Hours for High School Students: The Beneficial Value of them.

This is a Hot Topic that has been burning the wires as it has been debated a lot during the last couple of years in the State of Washington, as well as across the United States regarding high school students doing community hours as a requirement for graduating from high school as well.

At the beginning of this year this plan has been introduced into The Seattle School District’s Academic plan. I received a copy of the syllabus from their high school showing all the requirements needed in order to graduate. It showed me that all students going to high school in the Seattle School District will need to have completed 40 hours of community service prior to completing the 12th grade.

Many of the other states have also started to implement community service hours into their academic plans. The amount of hours that the student will to do will depend on where he or she lives, as each state as well as the school district is different. In fact, some students may not have to do any hours at all due to not all high schools have implemented this plan into their academic requirements for graduation.

There are many supporters for both sides on this matter. On the one side there are some of those that have stated that they feel it’s not right for the children to have to do this without having a say in the matter at all. They have also greatly expressed that they felt it should be something that is a choice for the students to do as well as not being penalized if they don’t sign up for them. Let alone having them completed prior to their graduation.

Then there are those who feel that community service hours are a great thing to have come along. That it will help to build up confidence and self-esteem in the teens as well as help them to connect to their community, as well to become more aware of their surroundings and the people around them. Which for so many teens help’s to fill the emptiness that many have and with that void filled it will help them to go down a better path in life. As such will be able to make better choices in their life, as they will be more aware of the consequences their actions may cause.

I feel that this is so true and feel that it’s a main key factor in what happen to my daughter and her life. What has happen to her has caused her to lose five years out of her life as well as her freedom. Which I believe was due to the fact that she had no real self-esteem in herself and did not feel connected to the community thus, helping to cause her not to understand what the consequences from her actions could be. To be able to fully feel any shame about some actions and the things she got involved in with others that where I belief felt as she did.

I feel that they were feeling as lost and confused as she was causing them to not really be connected to their surroundings or the people in their lives or surrounding them day-to-day and in so not fully understanding that they were hurting anyone. My oldest daughter has finally open her eyes to what and who’s around her as well as recognizing and that she has anger issues. She is learning to become more aware of her surroundings and become part of the community. The point that I am trying to make here is this (that while I was doing some research into this topic after I first learned about it after my other children entered high school) I have come to feel strongly that by doing community service it’s a great way to help students get involved with the community and help others. I think that it’s a great confidence builder and helps them to really connect.

Which I feel is something that everyone needs at some time or another in his or her life.
There are some websites as well as some articles that have been written on research done by some professors telling their thoughts and opinions on this that I located on this subject. There is a split down the middle on the positive and negative sides to this subject. Some of what I located is stories written by students themselves stating their side on the debate on it as well. Most of the stories that I found were on the positive side supporting the implementing of community service being a requirement in the academic plan in high school. Many students themselves had also stated in the article that they felt it should actually be introduced into school as early as Middle school. Helping the kids get a jump start to making the connection in the community, thus getting them started down the right path on the road towards adulthood.

There is a Statistical Analysis Report that was written by Kathryn Candler back in 1997, for the National Center for Education Statistic providing them the information that was needed to help on improving the Educational system. It’s a great article that with a lot of information in it that I feel you would want to read.

I also read somewhere once about a statement that Alex Haley, (the famous author who wrote the book Roots) had made where he was quoted as saying: “A Community is built up by the people in it.” Which I have found to be true based upon a simple fact of life, which by being involved in your community and connecting as one is a very important key factor in life. I feel that it helps you to learn how to be less self- centered and more of a team player in life, as you connect together with the community as one you are building it and yourself up together.
Thus planting your roots in the community and having a sense of belonging somewhere. Because building our community and its people up and not knocking them down is important as breathing as we all live in the same community and as such need to learn to live and work together as a community.

I have learned so much from all of the research that I did on this topic. I have come to strongly feel that this is something that we will come to appreciate in the future, with this starting to be implemented into the academic school plans in high schools across the United States. I feel that it does help them to get a jump start on building that connection between students, their school as well as with the community’s they live in. Thus, helping the students want to complete their high school education and maybe even going on to college as well. Who knows what lies in the future, hopefully that we implement this into the Middle schools as well?

High School Students and Community Service Hours:

This is a hot subject that has been and still as of today being talked about across the United States. And it looks like has been doing so for quite awhile. Many states have started to implement community service hours into their academic plans as a requirement for graduating from high school. Depending on what state you live in as well as the school area you are in will determine the amount of community hours you as the student will have to do. If any at all as some of the schools have not as of yet started doing this.

There have been many struggling debates over this subject during the last couple of years in Washington State. As to whether they should implement it into the academic plan for high school students. And just as of January 1st of this year it has been introduced into Seattle School District’s plan. There are many supporters on both sides of the coin on this matter. There are some of the supporters as well as some experts who feel that it’s not right for the children to have to do this without having a say in the matter at all. They have also greatly expressed in this opinion that they felt it should be something that is a choice for the students and not to be penalized if they don’t sign up for community hours and have them completed prior to their graduation.

While in the same token there are many who feel that it’s a great thing to have come along. That it helps to build confidence in them as well as connect to their community. And for so many to help fill the emptiness that many have and with that void filled it will help them to go down a better path in life. I even talked to my other children about it and asked them if this was something they really wanted to do. They told me that they were okay with it and felt it help them. Mid-Term Essay/Frame 2: Writing Process

Writing an essay is like building a house. There are many steps in the building of your essay and will involved many different parts to it. There are different types and styles of building a house and as such are in the writing process. Example of it will be the first stage will be setting the foundation down. This is the beginning to a five-step process. In the first step of the writing process where you do your pre-writing, thinking or better known as brainstorming your thoughts out and jotting them down in quick sentences, or paragraphs. The second step to the building process will be like putting the frame of your house up which will hold the walls that you will be putting up next. That step will involve you figuring out what or whom you want as a topic or subject idea to write about. The third step is going to involve you figuring out next on what plot or location setting you want as well and also who will be in it. Then the fourth and most important step of the process will involve writing it all down and taking all your sentences, ideas and such and putting them into paragraph form and making what is better known as your first of many rough drafts. Which is the last step in the building process and that is putting on the roof of your house. You have now completed your essay as well as your house.

Then will come another part. Just when you thought you were down. And course this will then be like building that additional bedroom or bathroom on to your house. Better known as where you go in and editing or revising. You will once again start to set down your foundation down on your process. The here comes do the first editing on it for spelling and grammar errors. Where you also can have someone take a look at it as well, using a fresh pair of eyes to check it over also for any error or such that you might have missed. Then you yourself do another edit called proof reading it, where you are again review it one last time for any additional errors/surface errors. Then the most important and final step in the process is where you publish it, taking your final draft and copy it to either paper or the computer depending on how you are posting it and your are done. Once you have start and completed the four or five steps in building your essay and writing it down on that final draft. You will feel just built yourself a house. Because as I mention in the beginning and though out this essay. Building a house and building an essay are pretty much one and the same. You lay down the foundation, set up the wall frames, put up the walls and top it with a roof, thus when completed this process you will have built yourself a house. This is one the different styles of building an essay and a house. They both have a similiar step process to completing your task at hand.

There are different styles of writing process steps one of which is called Staging steps: Which is the style that I use on my first and second essays that I done in writing class. The examples of the five stages that are involved in that process is as follows:

1.) Brainstorming (as mention above)

2.) Introduction: Thesis development: How you are starting it.

3.) Body paragraphs: Topic, Sentences and forms/format you will put them into

.4.) Conclusion: Bringing it all together into a complete package.

5.) Editing/Revising: Checking it many times, for any and all mistakes/spelling, grammar etc.

Once you have used these steps or stages depending on which way you want to go. And as you can see have many similarities with each other. They still both accomplish the same thing; they help me with the building of my essay so, that reader fully understands all if not most of what I am writing about. It helps to the flow to go together more smooth like and to transition from one paragraph to the next with out losing my reader.

In summary, I feel that I have learned a lot from my writing class that I am taking as well as from my teacher. He is helping me to building that foundation and making sure I build a strong one. It is the first step in building my way towards that future career that I want. And in building a super foundation to a stronger me and helping me to get that better place in the work field.

“High School Students and Community Service Hours”

While the experts tells us all about the statistic in regards to this very fact you are not fully aware of the true meaning of it until you have lived it. I personally have, with my oldest daughter who had such a low esteem of herself and no real confidence that she got into the wrong crowd. She ended up making some really big mistakes that have ended up almost costing her life. And it has cost her five years of her life due those mistakes she made.By not really feeling like she had a place in the community she started hanging around with some kids who in way was like her. Who felt that they had to act bigger and tougher then the rest of the kid’s. So they acted rough and went after people not so tuff. Which Of which when she lost her anger and knock a lady down, the person with her took advantage of the moment and ripped off the lady’s purse. Well, since my daughter was what they called the aggressor “The Principal One”. She got hit with a larger sentence from it. She was given a five year sentence. Of which she will be doing one to two years in an adult prison, and she has just turn seventeen.
I agree that with all that I have been hearing discussed about high school students having to complete community service hours in order to graduate from school. Because in my own personal experience I have seen what can happen to the children who are with out any connection to or feelings about the community that they live in.
All that I have seen and heard in the debates over this particular subject made me want to know more on it. Especially since we discovered it was implemented into this year’s school academic plan for high school students. I feel that it’s very true that many students feel somewhat empty like there is a void they can’t fill. There have been for many years so many drop- outs from high school per year. Because out of the ones who do make it through high school there is still many of them who don’t continue any additional education. Or barely survive in the adult world. By not really feeling like she had a place in the community she started hanging around with some kids who in way was like her. Who felt that they had to be big and bad. Something I have learned from this. Is that even the most involved with your kid type of parent can not always see what’s in front of you until it sometimes it’s too late.
Thus I feel that it’s a helping tool that fills in that void and emptiness some kids feel and it will help them to take the right path as they enter adult hood. After all of this I went and had a long talk with my older daughter and asked her about all of this that I had learned. She let me know that it was so true in her case, She had felt like something was missing and had not known how to let anyone know and this is where the wrong road was taken. She had to make those mistakes and after hitting the bottom, has since learned from all and building her way back up. She has even started working towards her GED. Also, has earned what is called Honor Level at the place she is at. This is a very important step on the road back. It shows that she is trying to change and become a part of the community she lives in. I feel strongly that if community service hours were in play back then she may not have taken this road in life. Or at least we may have caught it before we got to where we are. Thus this has come to make me aware of this and really opened my eyes.

Because when I first had found out this year that the Seattle School District had implemented this into the school academic plan I to was not thrill with the fact of it. And thought what is going on, and if they wanted to add it as maybe an extra credit class or such then they could do that. Allowing the kids to decide if want to do it. But then I started to really take at look at what was required and went out and researched it out. I discovered that even though our high school students in Seattle have to complete sixty hours of community service in order to graduate and get their diploma. There are other states that require even more hours. Also, they have from beginning of the 9th grade until end of the 12th grade to complete the hours. And all depending on the child will determine the amount of time to complete it. My son and youngest daughter have each completed twenty hours each and have just entered high school this September. While I was researching this subject I started to really open my eyes and take a look around me. I had not noticed before that there so many students who just hung around and really looked lost. I then started to ask some students about their thoughts on this. My other daughter and son also let me know that they do agree that this is a great thing to implement into the school plan. That it made them feel like they part of something important and gave them pride in that fact that they were helping other people. I totally agreed with them and the people that have been talking about this on all the debates and have the same opinion that its helps you to build character and bring up you self esteem and self confidence in yourself.
I notice that those I knew were involved in doing community hours seem to be less self center and giving to the community. They were connecting with it and coming together as one. Because by being more involved with the people around them and learning how to be a team player. And I once read somewhere by Alex Haley I believe, where he stated, “A Community is built up by the people in it.” And that is as true because as you connect with it, you are building it and yourself up. And doing so are planting roots to the community and will have a sense of belonging. . So, I truly agree in this matter of high school students doing community service hours and becoming involved in their community. That it does help those who are feeling lost or maybe need something to connect to. It allows them to know that there are places that they can turn to in a time of need. As it has been said before “We the people” well we the people include everyone as part of the community and are there for each other. Which means young as well as old. So I feel that we need to be there for our children. As many people have said and I believe this to be true: “They are the Future”. I feel that this is a great tool that has been implemented and fully support it.

“High School Students and Community Service hours “

High school students and community service hours is it “Slave labor or Character building”? There have been a lot of discussions going on about this matter and many debates between congress and the school boards around the United States. Many states have had it going on for the last couple of years and it has hit the Seattle school district and was just implemented into it as of this January.
A lot of parents, me included were not aware of this until our children started high school and then we are notified that as part of the academic plan sixty (60) community service hours were
to be completed by the end of the twelve grade in order to graduate and in fact some of the teachers in the ninth grade which is the beginning grade in the high school require the students to be in rolled and completed at the minimum fifteen (15) hours by the end of first semester or receive a lower grade in the class. What the teachers as well as the Seattle school board have said is that while for these students who have those teachers and need to complete the fifteen hours , this is a gift per say. As will help to teach them not to wait till the last moment and builds responsibility and is a jump start to finishing it and helps them to maybe even get it completed prior to the next year.
There are a lot of debating going on as to the full meaning of having students complete community service hours and that its not only for those who get in trouble with the law. And while there are some who think that this is another form of slave labor with out really knowing the true value of it or even looking into and discovering what’s involved. Many of them think differently on the matter. Many have after researching into the matter and watching what goes on in some the high school programs. And which is stated by, “Kris Betker and Jocelyn McCabe on the www.hecb.wa.gov/press/index.asp which is the Higher Education Coordination Board site.
Where there are many debates on the positive and negative reactions to the items that affect the schools and the students themselves. And there has been debates going on all across the states, including Michigan. Where there is currently a House Bill referred out to the Committee of Education for further study regarding this matter as well into the matter of if it’s Community Service or Servitude. Which you can see the updates as well as the history of this bill at the site, www.michiganlegislature.org Also, on the Seattle school website at www.seattleschool.edu you can see where it is written about community service hours and that they the students need to have completed the sixty by the end of the twelve grade. And even for those students who complain on the hours. They need to be aware that there are states that require even more hours. With all the people I have talked to in regards to this and asked their opinions about it. I have discovered as well that there are many who agree 100 % on this matter. They feel that it builds character; the kids learn to have responsibility and to be part of the community they live in. Building their self esteem and confidence in themselves and learning to reach out to each and sharing as well as feel in some of the emptiness that some of the students feel in their lives. And helps to build a better connection between the parents, teachers and community as well as help to shorten the list of potential drop outs down the road. From what I saw on many of the sites was they all have a similar main point. Which was if we “Set the standard, Measuring the results, then we will be celebrating the Success of Our Students as they stride to meet and beat that standard.” Because of the simple fact that was mention in many of the sites as well as by the people I talked to; “Encouragement goes along way in building up your pride and confidence in yourself.” And helping them to have this confidence and pride in what they do, they will then go far in life and be successful it as they enter the adult world.
